People are Seeking Connection and Purpose

The prolonged COVID-19 pandemic has brought about a huge challenge for leaders and businesses as they struggle to engage their employees and retain talent. The Great Resignation of 2021 is a real business concern for leaders and organizations in 2022. Many employees are looking deeply into who they are as individuals and reflecting on their purpose in life. They are desiring their work to be more in alignment with their values.

Advice for Leaders:

Be Real. The first step as a leader is to know who you are and to lead from a place of authenticity. Walk your talk. When you say something, do it as well. Actions matter more than words, and employees are looking for authentic leaders who live what they say. Develop an empathy posture toward your team that acknowledges how they are doing and where they may need encouragement or support.

Build Deeper Connection. This is the relationship piece. It is important for leaders to grow in ways that they connect with their employees. Leaders must be able to get to know their employees beyond just the work environment. Be curious and ask questions of people that validate them as much more than just employees. Listen to what they say and what they don't say. Work to develop the skill to meet each person right where they are. Always maintain open lines of communication and connection.

Continually Offer Purpose. This is the continual work that comes from knowing your people and their values and assessing how those values are (or are not) in alignment with your own values or the values of your company. Are your employees in an environment to thrive and to bring their best? Seek to identify the places that are out of alignment. Create, innovate and encourage understanding between your people and the organization's goals to bring them together in greater alignment. Be clear that the purpose of the individual and the company are both important.
